HE’S OUT THERE
(Starring Yvonne Strahovsky, Anna Pniowsky, Abigail Pniowsky. Written by Mike Scannell. Directed by Quinn Lasher.)
Our tale starts off with Laura (Yvonne Strahovsky) packing up her SUV and getting her two daughters, Kayle (Anna Pniowsky) and Maddie (Abigail Pniowsky), ready for their trip to the lake house. Her husband Shawn (Justin Bruening) is attempting to make amends for not leaving with them and swears he will only be a few hours behind them. Laura isn’t waiting and she and her two girls make the trek to the house.
As soon as they arrive at this isolated house deep in the woods, she has trouble getting the pad lock off the gate to the property when Owen (Julian Bailey) shows up to help out. Seems he is one of the oldest families that has lived out in this remote area, the second oldest were the people that used to own Laura and Shawn’s house, who decided to sell after their son went missing and they could not find him. He was a little “slow witted” as Owen explains. They get the gate open and the family goes in.
Once on the ground the kids are playing when they find a piece of yarn tied to trees that lead to large stump set up like a tea party. The two are excited. The rest of the day is pretty uneventful until Maddie gets sick that night. Turns out Maddie ate a cup cake left at this mysterious tea party set up, and now she needs a doctor. But there is an issue, something is outside the house and wants in. Not wanting to wait any longer for Shawn to show up they decide to make a run for the car to make their escape but the wheels literally fall off the car as they attempt to drive away. They get back into the house and hold up still waiting for Shawn, who does show up, but at the once again locked gate which he can’t open. As he calls his wife he can hear it ringing in the distance and he finds it in the middle of the woods by the tea party set up… lets just say things don’t end up well for him. The rest of the movie is survival mode for the mom and the two girls.

HE’S OUT THERE has the utmost simplistic story ever used for a slasher movie. A kid disappears, obviously grown up now and out for revenge? What is he getting revenge for? People not appreciating his tea parties? No wifi out in the woods? No city water? You are never told why he is pissed or why he is killing everyone, kept waiting for that twist where the husband was in on it, or the neighbor Owen had issues, something… but they stick with the missing kid and some book he left at the house about “darkness” that the kids read throughout the movie. Really makes no sense why anything is happening.
Why did the mom and kids have to go to the house right then instead of just waiting a few more hours and riding down with the dad? Once they get to the house they do nothing but play for a while, eat some pizza and go to bed. Was it really important for them to get to the house a few hours early for this? And did they not teach their kids not to eat random food they find? “Don’t take candy from strangers… but any food left unattended is fair game…”
This storyline is so weak that I should tell you to stay clear, but the acting is really good, especially from the two little girls that are actually sisters so I’m sure that helps them pull off the sisterly bond. Seems the Pniowsky sisters are just starting off their careers and each one of them are already doing mainstream movies with stars like Casey Affleck and Heather Graham, I’m sure it won’t be the last time you hear about them.

Although the killer (Ryan McDonald ) has no real motive, he is a pretty cool looking killer. Wearing a mask that looks like bandages, he is a pretty eerie sight. And some scenes play really well, like when the mom is yanked out a window of the house and sisters are left to fend for themselves. They think their dad is at the gate in his car (although he is actually lying on the front porch with his eyes carved out) so they make a run for the gate. Once there they find the mom bound and gagged in the trunk of the car and when they are trying to get her free the killer runs up behind them with an axe and chops the mom in the side, he then proceeds to chase the girls with the car.
Good acting, nice setups and some real tension makes this movie watchable, despite that there is no real reason for any of it. If they had developed this story more this could have been a great movie, but in the end it had all of the elements of a great movie with a mediocre script. Still worth a viewing for the scare elements.
