CANNIBAL COP
(Jason Crowe, Channing Dodson, Gretchen Mosby, Roni Jonah. Written and directed by Donald Farmer)
Sort of did a double feature, after watching HOOKER WITH A HACKSAW I jumped head first into the next Donald Farmer epic CANNIBAL COP.
Our tale begins with Jennifer (Channing Dodson) telling her friend Ashlie (Gretchen Mosby) a horrible story about a family on vacation with their dog when a cop pulls them over. The dog jumps out of the car to play and the cop shoots it. He only gets three days suspension and was back on the force. This infuriates Jennifer and she vows to video any abusive cop and expose him to the world. Enter Warbeck, a crooked cop who abuses his badge by taking advantage of hookers and drug dealers. When drug dealer Diego has a run in with Warbeck, Jennifer is lucky enough to be there to take the video (wow, she just said she was going to video bad cops and she stumbles right into one right off the bat), the meeting between Warbeck and Diego goes bad and the cop ends up shooting him. Deigo lives long enough to call his girlfriend to tell her to get in touch with Queen Sheeba, she’ll know what to do. His girlfriend does his bidding and Queen Sheeba cast her spell and brings Diego back from the dead as a zombie to extract his revenge.
Jennifer goes to big TV news lady Brianna (Roni Jonah) to show her the video she shot. Brianna is not interested and tells her to return when she has a white cop beating up a black person, now that is news. No one cares about white on white. So Jennifer stays on the case and talk about being at the right place at the right time, she again runs into Warbeck beating up a black man. When Warbeck sees her taping him he runs after her but she gets away, Warbeck then walks into an alley where the zombie Diego attacks him and turns him into a cannibal… sweet revenge.
Now somehow, despite Jennifer running from Warbeck when he first saw her taping him, she somehow miraculously got back in time to tape Warbeck being attacked by the zombie. Now she has what Brianna needs, a black guy being beat up and a zombie turning a cop into a cannibal, this is video gold. After convincing Brianna of her great find she even coerces Brianna into letting her be her personal cameraperson when they go to investigate one of the cannibal victims. Who cares all she has is an iphone that she continually holds incorrectly while filming, she is an obvious choice as a network news show cameraperson.
As the victims pile up the two keep tracking down the cannibal cop until a final showdown with Queen Sheeba wraps this little tale up.

After watching HOOKER WITH A HACKSAW, CANNIBAL COP is such a better looking movie. Actual lighting, camera setups, a clean look with maybe not the best actors in the world but at least most are good looking. Once again the story is pretty shallow and the murder scenes lack impact. One scene Warbeck kills a hooker on the street and it is obvious that each person was shot at different times as you never see them together at any point during the attack and it really doesn’t match up. Jennifer is super attractive but is very disillusioned in her quest to end police brutality. How she magically shows up every time Warbeck is around, not knowing anything about him, makes you think she should be playing the lottery instead of chasing her elusive dream. And how does she know Warbeck is a cop? In every scene he simply flashes his wallet, obviously no badge is in sight. In fact, our only reference that he is a cop are the many scenes shot through a windshield driving aimlessly through the city as you hear a police radio in the background. You never actually see anyone driving the car (and this scene happens multiple times throughout the movie), it really reminds me the opening of POLICE SQUAD where the siren goes through a car wash, a girls shower room, etc… Except you don’t even get the siren, just the sound of a police radio.
I believe the real problem with the movie is its really drawn out and pointless ending. Everyone walks around this amusement park for an incredibly long time before Warbeck runs into Queen Sheeba for a less than exciting ending.
We do get to meet out Kasper Meltedhair as one of the victims. Yes, the girl from HOOKER WITH A HACKSAW is a guest victim playing a… hooker. Is she being typecast? We also see Farmer in a Hitchcock like cameo as a Sergeant that talks to Brianna in an over exaggerated Southern drawl that is reminiscent of Carroll O’Connor IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT.
CANNIBAL COP is a good-looking movie but its anorexic storyline keeps it from becoming a really good movie. Wish they would have spent a little more money and beefed up the murders and maybe puts some action at the end for the climatic ending as the movie had possibilities but really falls short. Once again Maria Ortiz is credited at the end of the movie despite that she died back in 2000, so I assume this is an ongoing homage to her as I know her and Donald were very close. Available on Amazon Prime.
